Building Societies Act 1965

Constitution of building societies - Functions and general powers of building societies

9D: Registration of documents not to constitute constructive notice

You could also call this:

“Registering or filing society documents doesn't mean everyone knows about them”

You should know that just because a building society’s rules or other documents are officially registered, filed, or available for inspection, it doesn’t mean everyone automatically knows about them or understands what’s in them.

For example, if the Registrar has registered or filed some documents about a building society, or if you can look at these documents at the society’s office, it doesn’t mean you’re expected to know everything that’s in them.

This rule is there to protect people who might not have seen or read these documents. It means that no one can say, “Well, you should have known about this because it was registered or available to see.” The law recognises that most people won’t have read these documents, even if they could have.
