Weights and Measures Act 1987

Offences and penalties

37: Presumption as to possession of weights, measures, etc, for use for trade

You could also call this:

“The law assumes weights and measures at work are for trading”

If you have a weight, measure, or a tool for weighing or measuring, and you use it for business, the law assumes you’re using it to trade. This applies if the item is:

  • With you while you’re working
  • At your work place (inside or outside)
  • In your work vehicle, boat, or aircraft

The law thinks you’re using these items for trade unless you can prove otherwise. This rule helps make sure that businesses use correct weights and measures when they buy and sell things.
